These pins are also referred to as roll, tension, split, and expansion pins. They feature a slot along one side, which can be squeezed closed during installation in unthreaded holes. As they expand slightly after installation, they generate outward tension, thereby creating a tight hold against the hole wall. These pins are effective in damping shock and vibration in your system and preventing the loosening of components. They are often utilized as hinge pins or to secure springs and power transmission components firmly in place.

To facilitate insertion, these pins are designed with at least one chamfered end, providing an angled surface for easy placement. Make sure to install them in a hole that is slightly smaller than the pin diameter.

The measurement of breaking strength involves the use of double shear, which means that a pin is broken into three separate pieces and the amount of force required for this is recorded.
