Rounded Machine Keys
These keys, also referred to as feather keys, are designed to completely fill oval keyways upon installation. This serves to reduce stress on both the key and the shaft. When used in a closed keyway, these keys prevent sliding along the shaft axis and offer the convenience of easily sliding gears, hubs, and other components into place due to their rounded ends. Machine keys are typically made from a material that is either equally or harder than the shaft and other accompanying components. However, when a key is intended to be sacrificial, it is advisable to select a softer key that will shear off under excessive force. This serves to protect valuable equipment from costly damage.
Steel keys offer good strength.
Keys made from 316 stainless steel are known for their superior resistance to corrosion. But when compared to traditional steel keys, they fall short on overall strength. Additionally, it's worth noting that 316 stainless steel keys may exhibit slight magnetic properties.
Oversized keys, just a tad larger than the specified size in the table, come in handy for high-torque applications or when replacing a key in a worn-out keyway. These keys fit snugly and must be pressed into place for use. On the other hand, if you need a slightly looser fit or if you're working with inconsistent keyways, you might want to opt for undersized keys. These keys are slightly smaller than the specified size in the table. They're perfect for parts that need to be taken apart frequently, such as for maintenance or prototyping.
